Chapter 16:

It actually wasn’t as difficult to find the path he’d taken before. The temperature outside was still cold enough that the snow hadn’t melted, so they were able to follow his tracks from yesterday without a problem. They moved in relative silence, both caught up in their own thoughts.

Though it’d felt like he’d chased the masked man a good distance, it turned out the walk was only ten minutes or so, and soon enough, the wooden structure came into view.

“That’s it?” Oaklynn asked as they carefully approached.

Gael nodded and pulled out his blaster, prepared this time. “Get behind me.”

She followed his lead, keeping close as he slinked over to the door and gave a mouthed countdown from three before yanking it open.

He held the blaster out in front of him and did a sweep of the inside, lowering it only slightly once he was confident they were alone. “Clear.”

Oaklynn moved past him, rushing into the cabin, eyes already taking in the walls.

The blank walls.

Gael swore.

All that remained of the evidence he’d seen yesterday were bits of torn edges and silver and brass-colored tacks. Everything else had been removed, even that scent that had been so heady before had faded, almost as though the place had been aired out.

“What are the chances there’s another cabin out here and you’ve brought us to the wrong one?” Oaklynn asked, though it was obvious she knew how ridiculous that sounded. A hopeless expression morphed her features. “I can’t believe this is happening. This place was supposed to be safe.”

“I know.”

“And you’re sure you weren’t in any of the pictures?”

“No.” He moved closer to her, ready to offer comfort, but she was already back in motion.

“There’s got to be something here,” she insisted, scouring the work benches and even going so far as to crouch and check beneath them. “Something Wade left behind.”

“I’m sorry.” Gael felt awful for disappointing her like this. Maybe he should have taken the time to come back last night after all, the darkness be damned. He could have taken more photographic evidence, higher quality ones, or scanned for prints with the N.I.M.

“You don’t have to apologize,” she told him. “You’re doing the best you can. I know that. We all do.”

“If Shade were here, he’d have solved this already,” he said. It’d been meant as a joke—mostly—but it came out with too much sincerity and regret to properly hit that mark and she saw through him.

“Shade and you were always really close.” She hesitated, almost as though she wasn’t sure of what to say. “I never reached out…after. I’m sorry about that. I bet you miss him.”

“Terribly,” he admitted since that ship had sailed. She’d been there that first year, the three of them friends of a sort. “He was much better at all of this than I am.”

“That’s not true,” she chided. “He didn’t solve all of those cases on his own. You did it together. You were a great team, everyone saw that from the start. That kind of partnership is rare.
